A REPORT ON THE CONSTRUCTION, ERECTION AND OPERATION
OF AMATEUR RADIO STATION WA4FPX RUSSELLVILLE
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL, RUSSELLVILLE, ALA.
On November 13, 1961 application was made to the Alabama Section of the American Chemical Society for a grant in aid to secure funds to build and operate an UHF amateur radio station on the premise of the Russellville Senior High School, Russellville, Ala. The purpose was to determine the propagation abilities of radio communication on the 50 to 54 mc amateur radio band in the North Alabama area. The project also involved the attempted solutions to the UHF communication problems existing between north and south Alabama posed by the elevation of Spruce Pine Mountain and the phenomenon of line-of-sight transmission versus ground wave transmission.
A letter was received from William J. Barrett, Chairman Education Committee, American Chemical Society, Alabama Section, on December 18, 1961 notifying us that our application for a grant had been approved but for an amount less than requested. The letter states in part, "because of limited funds, approval has been given for one-half the amount you requested. The grant is, therefore, conditional on your being able to raise the other half from other sources. We hope you will be able to do this locally. (pp) The amount of the grant is $60.00, and the purpose for which it is intended is to provide for the purchase of equipment for study of propagation of UHF radio waves."
A plea was presented to three Russellville civic organizations, the Junior Chamber of Commerce, the Rotary Club and the Civitan Club, to obtain the additional funds needed. Each of these three organizations responded with a contribution of $20.00 each. This, with the National Defense Education Art Title III matching funds, gave us the necessary amount to begin the project.
